On behalf of the Organizing Committee and the host club H.O.R.C., I would like to welcome the skippers and crews participating in the AEGEAN 600.
I hope that our efforts for a successful event will be rewarded and the participants will enjoy the races and the social events scheduled for them.

My warmest wishes for Good Sailing.

Ioannis Maragkoudakis
Commodore Hellenic Offshore Racing Club

The Greek poet, Nobel prize laureate, Odysseas Elytis, has presented Greece in the best possible way. “If you take Greece apart, in the end you will be left with an olive tree, a vineyard and a boat…which means that with these items you can rebuild it…”

We are talking about elements, like the sea, that are in our DNA and constitute an integral part of our identity.

In this lot of “land”, with which we were blessed, we intend to invest all our efforts and initiatives in order to upgrade our tourist product. Scuba diving, marinas and sea tourism in general are high on the agenda of the Government and the Ministry.

We want to support and promote the treasures of our country, as well as, all those initiatives that promote this endeavor, like the International Aegean Sailing Rally which is a regatta with a long history, organized every year since 1964. Such events on one hand help the promotion of Greece as a country of
marine athletics and sea tourism, placing it in the list of countries with international regattas; and on the other, promote its great cultural heritage.

The wind is fair for Greek tourism and it is in our will to cease the moment.

The sport of Sailing, both in the Olympic as well the offshore races, has offered to our country many distinctions filling us with special moments of joy and national pride. Greece, with its unique coastline, has one of the best racing venues in the world for the sport.
I am happy because, for the first time, our country will host a 600 navy miles race of non-stop sailing, a race designed by sailors for sailors.
Leading sailors from Greece and abroad are expected to participate in the “Aegean 600” event. Distinguished crews with their boats will live a true experience once they sail in the Aegean Sea, where every mile can offer various sailing emotions. The competition is expected to be great and the winners will need to show their sailing skills and dexterities in challenging weather conditions.
We are committed by our governmental program and we are working systematically to attract as many as possible sport events that can promote our country as a sport tourist destination and to that end your contribution is important as well as necessary. Sport is a matter of education, a social and cultural good, the right of every human being and we are working towards this direction.
The Aegean Sea has been described as the sea of myths and legends. I wish the contestants to create their own legend in a sailing race where the joy of participation will make them all winners.”

Eleftherios Avgenakis
Deputy Minister of Sports

In 2022 our country will host for the second time the “AEGEAN 600”, an offshore, non-stop 600 nm sailing race. The Region of Attica supports innovative ideas in practice and “AEGEAN 600” is one of them.

In this context, sailors from all over the world will gather in our country for over a week, when they will have the chance to experience the Greek hospitality, visit the archaeological sites and admire the monuments of Athens before sailing away on an exceptional sailing race and getting to know the beauty and the specific nature of the Aegean Sea. Both the start and the finish of this sailing adventure will take place in Sounio. The contestants will then return to their home country with wonderful memories made on this sailing race.

Since ancient years, Greece has been associated with seamanship and sailing. Our sailors are ranked among the finest in the world, therefore, competition is expected to be fierce.

The Region of Attica supports this sailing event and wishes that it will become a sailing institution, as other 600 nm sailing races already are in various parts of the world.

Giorgos Patoulis
Regional Governor of Attica

The “AEGEAN 600” sailing race is a wonderful opportunity to visit the Aegean Sea, through a unique route of 600 miles, passing from the most beautiful islands.

Sport meets culture and history, and the participants during their stay in Greece, will get the chance to visit ancient Greek culture heritage and taste the Greek cuisine and explore the entire Aegean Sea.

The social and environmental aspects of the race can help to promote the message for environmental awareness and the HELLENIC OFFSHORE RACING CLUB has a key role to play during the race and also through its actions for environmental protection.

Because in order to adapt to the modern trends of the tourist product, Greece will have to improve the quality of mass tourism and at the same time to fully unlock the potentials of the alternative/thematic tourism.

The GNTO, stands by every activity that promotes Greece internationally and especially when it matches with its new strategy for sustainable tourism development.

With these words I send my best wishes to the participants and hope to have a unique time in Greece.

Angela Gerekou
President of the Greek National Tourism Organization

The relationship of the Greeks with the sea has been measured for millennia. Since ancient times, with their small sailboats or rowing boats, they were bold seafarers and explorers. In modern times, our sailing athletes are amongst the world’s leading and compete in international events in Olympic classes as well as inshore and offshore regattas.

The Aegean Sea, known from philosophy, literature and fine arts to all civilized world, is one of the most beautiful sailing venues for racing and leisure sailing. The Hellenic Offshore Racing Club, a yacht club with extensive experience in organizing international events, decided to give sailors the opportunity to take part in a 600 nm non-stop race. AEGEAN 600 is a race with many challenges as the participants will need to come “face-to-face” with the famous Aegean Northern winds while, at the same time, enjoy the beauties of the Aegean islands.

As a member of the International Olympic Committee, president of the Hellenic Olympic Committee and a former Olympic athlete, I would like to invite sailors to take part in the “AEGEAN 600”, wish them to enjoy the sailing race as well as the parallel onshore events planned by the organizing committee, always taking into consideration the principles and values of Greek hospitality.

Spyros Kapralos
President Hellenic Olympic Committee

Greece, the birthplace of the Olympic Games, will welcome sailors from all over the world in the summer 2022 to take part in the “AEGEAN 600” Yacht Race. As president of the Hellenic Olympians Association and as a Water Polo Olympic medalist and an active sailing athlete, I was excited from the first moment I heard about AEGEAN 600 back in 2020.

The competitors will find themselves in a beautiful racing arena facing islands where Olympians and Champions are originated since antiquity, enjoying a route designed, as the organizers say, by sailors for sailors and where everyone can enjoy cultural and recreational events.

As a sailor, I have taken part in races in the Aegean Sea and I cannot describe in words the emotions that a competitive event in these waters create that is never the same and where no miles are the same as before.
I am not certain whether my international obligations will allow me to participate in this race nevertheless I will be present at all social and cultural events before and after the Start and Finish to help foreign crews to feel at home. Therefore, I invite all the athletes to join this race in Greece, my country, the country of sports and hospitality.

President Hellenic Olympians Association
